SONOMA, Calif. -- Just like he did a week ago in Seattle, Ron Capps saved his best run of qualifying for Saturday afternoon, turning in a 4.939-second effort at 301.07 mph that was good enough for seventh place going into Sunday's Fram/Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

Tommy Johnson, Capps' Skoal Racing teammate, was 14th, with a best of 5.054 at 284.39 mph. In first-round competition, Capps squares off against Bruce Sarver, No. 10 at 4.945 at 301.00, and Johnson meets Scotty Cannon, No. 3 at 4.896 at 305.70.

"We were sneaking up on it and we ran good on our last run," said Capps of his Green Skoal Racing Camaro. "The car was on a good run Friday night but we couldn't get it to the finish line. We felt we could run a low 4.9 and we did."

Johnson's Blue Skoal Racing Camaro did not improve its Friday run of 5.054 at 284.39 mph.

"All of the numbers said we should've run better but I guess you could say it was a missed opportunity," he said. "We changed the supercharger before that run and it dropped a cylinder. We know we are capable of running better."
