SANTOS RETURNS HOME FOR DIVISION SEVEN RACE AT SEARS POINT ... Rick Santos, the 1997 and 1998 World and Division Seven Champion will compete at Sears Point Raceway this weekend for the Division Seven event. Santos, born in Castro Valley, Calif., now resides in Antioch, Calif. located about 45 miles from Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma.

"I always look forward to running at Sears Point because it is so close to home," said Santos. "I have a lot of family and friends that come out for the race."

MAJOR CHANGES TO THE OAKWOOD HOMES DRAGSTER ...

Crew chief Norm Grimes and the Oakwood Homes team have been using a 451 Brad Anderson Hemi, but the Division Seven race at Sears Point will be the debut of the 431 Hemi. The team have switched to a smaller engine to decrease the weight of the car.

"The transition has been a work in progress for two years," said crew chief Norm Grimes. "We had to phase out the old engines, but the demise of a lot of parts at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Utah, caused us to make this change now. The smaller the engine, the less the car weighs and the more efficient it becomes."

"We hoped to have an opportunity to test at the dyno, but we have had no time. We shouldn't see anything different at the first race. We have to get through the learning curve first, but this group always seems to get through them pretty quickly. Given the right circumstances, the performance should be outstanding. We could even improve on the 5.39 we had in Atlanta, Ga." "It won't be long before these other teams are running as good as, or better than, us. We need to continue to work to improve our program, or we won't have an advantage."

OAKWOOD HOMES DEBUT ...

It was at the Autolite Nationals at Sears Point Raceway one year ago July 26 that Oakwood Homes made their debut on the Federal-Mogul Dragster owned by Jack O'Bannon.

SANTOS DEFENDING CHAMPION OF SEARS POINT DIVISION SEVEN EVENT ...

At this event last year, Santos qualified second and won in the final against Steve Faria with an ET of 5.58 over Faria's 5.71. That win allowed Santos to clinch the Division Seven title for the second year in a row. It was his fifth division start of 1998.

Santos has several starts at Sears Point Raceway, both at a national and divisional level. Last year, he went into the Autolite Nationals with seven straight wins, but the streak ended when his oil line broke and he lost to Shane Gay in the second round. Santos won the national events at Sears Point in 1993 and 1994 with his family owned S & S Automotive Dragster. Santos currently leads the division seven point standings by 143 points over Miersh.

SANTOS STATEMENTS ...

On Utah ... "Our loss in the semi-finals at Rocky Mountain Raceways was very disappointing, but the worst part was breaking all those parts. We did not have a titanium bell housing, so that is the main reason we had to miss the all-star event in Columbus, Ohio, which we were really looking forward to." On Sears Point ... "Sears Point can be a tricky track," said Santos. "There is only about 100 feet of concrete pad compared to 300 feet at most tracks. The track can get slick because of the rubber that builds up on the asphalt. Our best run in the past there was a low 50, so I think if we run consistent low 50's, we could have a chance to win."
