SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 3, 2001) - Dean Skuza wielded his Mopar Parts Dodge R/T Nitro Funny Car to the second position following the first day of qualifying for the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals at picturesque Sears Point Raceway Friday evening.
Skuza drove to a 4.942-second elapsed time at 305.91 mph, marling top speed of the day.
"We just wanted to get down the track and earn lane choice," Skuza said. "We were soft in the clutch set up for that reason. We hoped that we could get from A to B without smoking the tires. The track was as good as it was going to get this weekend. We'll be able to do a little experimenting tomorrow."
Osborne Grabs Fifth
Alderman Lands 14th
Mark Osborne, driver of the new Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T, took home the provisional fifth position after the first day of Pro Stock activity. The Abingdon, Va., resident clocked a 6.896-second elapsed time at 200.23 mph, garnering the top speed of the session and becoming the only car over 200 mph.
"We had a good run that second session," Osborne said. "I almost shut it off because I was awfully loose there at the top end, but I knew I was on a good run and I didn't want to lose this session. I think lane choice will be real important, so that was a critical run."
Teammate Darrell Alderman and his Hemi-powered Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T struggled with the track conditions as well. After shutting the car off in the first session due to slick track conditions, Alderman made a clean pass and grabbed the 14th-qualifying position with a 6.998-second elapsed time at 198.38 mph.
"We were kind of put at a disadvantage because we we're the first car out in that second session," Alderman commented. "I slid around in the lane and made a decent run, but we left a lot on the track. We'll come out and get into the top half during tat early session tomorrow."
The Dodge Motorsports Neon R/T of Larry Morgan collected the 12th-qualifying position with a 6.938-second lap at 198.38 mph. The Newark, Ohio resident was pleased with his effort.
"I'm so happy with how we performed in that last session," Morgan said. "We were really light with our clutch, so I think we left three or four hundredths in the track, but we just wanted to get down the track. We accomplished everything we wanted to."
