Will No. 12 at Sonoma; Looks for winner's circle
SONOMA, Calif. (July 27, 2007) -- With new associate sponsor Jolt Energy Gum on board, Hillary Will, driver of the KB Racing LLC-owned, Kalitta Motorsports-managed Top Fuel Dragster, qualified No. 12 for eliminations at the 20th running of the NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals. Will has qualified at 38 consecutive races.
In the first session on Friday, Will qualified well when she opened with a strong run of 4.651 seconds, good for the sixth spot at the time. Then because of a strict 10 p.m. track curfew and the luck, or bad luck, of the draw, Will was one of 10 drivers in the Top Fuel second qualifying session that was denied a run when an oil down and the curfew occurred at approximately the same time. Unfortunately, the lack of a chance to run dropped Will to the No. 11 position at day's end.
Then came the hot sun and slippery track and most nitro fuel cars had trouble negotiating the Infineon Raceway quarter-mile on Saturday. Will's two runs today didn't improve her position on the qualifying ladder.
"The track was marginal today and if you were set up right you went down the track and ran fairly decent. But nine out of ten had troubles, including us," said Will's crew chief Jim Oberhofer. "Our car seemed too aggressive today, so for tomorrow's eliminations we plan to back it down some and see it we can get the best of both the track and opponent. We'll take the information we gathered today and go from there."
Will added, "To get a win here in front of the hometown crowd would be extra special. As a team, we're going to do everything we can to put this KB Racing dragster in the winner's circle. I'm thankful for everybody that came down here from the Fortuna and Eureka (Calif.) area and especially those that took the time to come by and visit me. It was like a family reunion out here this weekend. Hopefully, we do out part tomorrow to make your trip special."
As the No. 12 qualifier, Will squares off against former Funny Car driver, turned Top Fuel driver Whit Bazemore. Bazemore qualified No. 5 (4.582/323.43).
