CAPPS COLLECTS FIRST WIN OF SEASON AT NHRA RACE IN SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. (July 19, 2010) -- Ron Capps collected his first victory of the 2010 NHRA season when he won in Funny Car at the Fram Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway. Capps was one of five drivers who raced to wins on Goodyear Eagles.
The other winners equipped with Goodyear rubber included Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock), Mike De Palma (Competition Eliminator) and Shawn Langdon (Super Gas).
It was a record-changing weekend. Dixon bettered the track's Top Fuel speed record with a run of 319.75 mph. Allen Johnson reset both the track's Pro Stock records. The new Pro Stock mark for speed is 210.77 mph and the new elapsed time record is 6.545 seconds.
In the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series for professionals, Capps beat Schumacher Racing teammate 'Fast' Jack Beckman in the Funny Car final. The reaction times were about the same and Capps simply got to the finish faster. John Force still leads the championship race with 1,114 points. Robert Hight is second with 1,071.
Dixon beat Tony Schumacher in a classic final round between Top Fuel rivals. Schumacher left the line first but Dixon won the race, his 56th career win. Dixon leads the standings with 1,444 points. Schumacher is next with 1,233.
Coughlin defeated Jason Line in the Pro Stock final. Coughlin collected his 51st career Pro Stock win, his third victory this season and his second win at Sonoma. Mike Edwards still leads the Pro Stockers with 1,526 points. Allen Johnson is next with 1,113.
In the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsmen, Langdon picked up his Super Gas victory, his sixth national win overall. He was driving the car owned by Justin Lamb. De Palma out-ran his opponent to get the win in Competition Eliminator.
