CRUZ PEDREGON BOWS OUT IN THE QUARTERFINAL ROUND IN SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2007) -- Post card perfect California weather greeted Cruz Pedregon and his Advance Auto Parts NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car team at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals this weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. He is battling for a coveted position in the top eight in the 2007 NHRA POWERade point standings. He entered the weekend ninth in Countdown to the Championship.
After qualifying in the No. 15 position with a 4.945 E.T. at 305.22 mph, Pedregon faced Jack Beckman in the first round of final round eliminations. In front of a standing room only crowd at Infineon Raceway, he was quick to the throttle and first across the stripe with a 4.900/301.67 mph pass. Beckman was up in smoke at the hit and never a factor.
"It was a good first round win for the Advance Auto Parts team," Pedregon said. "We struggled with the electronics and dropped cylinders all weekend, but it was great to advance to the quarterfinals and pick up some points."
Pedregon, the 1992 NHRA POWERade Nitro Funny Car World Champion paired off against 14-time NHRA Funny Car Champion, John Force in a classic quarterfinal match-up.
"We fell short against John Force," said Pedregon. "He was trying to cooperate with us and he didn't make his best run. That was the time for us to take advantage and pick up an important round win. We dropped the No. 5 cylinder at the hit, and lost about 1,000 horsepower so we were done early in the race. That's drag racing, you are either a winner or you're not in about 5 seconds or less."
The Advance Auto Parts team will take a brief rest, and then back to work next weekend as the team was invited to compete in the 30th Annual Night Under Fire exhibition match race at Norwalk Raceway Park.
"Norwalk is a huge event," Pedregon said. "The Bader Family built this race into one of the largest single day events in drag racing. It is incredible- large crowds and an unbelievable firework display."
Pedregon will use this event to get his Funny Car back on track.
"We're going to treat it as another opportunity to get our Advance Auto Parts Funny Car more runs," Pedregon said of the pending race. "When you have a tough weekend, you test and make sure you have all your equipment working properly. That's just what we'll do. I feel confident that we are just dealing with a loose wire somewhere and we'll find it this week."
