ANTRON BROWN QUALIFIES MATCO TOOLS CAR SECOND AT SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. (July 17, 2010) - Antron Brown drove his Don Schumacher Racing-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the No. 2 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Infineon Raceway. It is the 26th time that the defending event champion of the Sonoma race has qualified second and third this season.
Brown entered the final day of qualifying for the 23rd annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals in the provisional No. 2 qualifying position after clocking an elapsed time of 3.863-seconds on Friday afternoon at the Sonoma track. Friday's evening qualifying session was canceled due to the track's 10 p.m. noise curfew. Brown earned two bonus points on Saturday's first qualifying effort by clocking the second quickest pass of the Q3. The 24-time NHRA winner used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to post a run of 3.920 at 312.50 in the right lane at Infineon. Only Brown's DSR teammate Cory McClenathan was quicker at 3.89-seconds. The bright blue Matco Tools rail lost traction on its final qualifying attempt and slowed to a pass of 4.925 at 148.40. Brown earned four bonus points in qualifying this weekend at Infineon Raceway. He now has an average qualifying position of 4.73 in 15 races this season.
"It always feels good to qualify near the top of the pack," Brown said. "We made two really good runs in the heat of the day and just missed it on that last pass. We were real close to making it and it was on the way to running a mid-3.80. Our Matco Tools car is running strong and we should be able to go some rounds on Sunday. We're going to just take things one at a time and hopefully do good for all this great Matco support we have here at Sonoma."
Brown will face off against No. 15 qualifier Terry McMillen in the opening round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday at Infineon Raceway. Brown is 1-1 in his career against McMillen. He has a mark of 24-14 this season with six final-round appearances.
