Howard ready for the 'big go'
CLERMONT, Ind. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard is ready to do battle at this weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park, the biggest race in all of drag racing. The team has completed repairs to the chassis after a brush with the wall in Brainerd, and is excited about getting back in the action this weekend.
Just getting ready for the event was a challenge for the team. Of course, having a chassis builder on your team such as Joe Monden can come in handy. The team took the car to Monden's chassis shop over the weekend and repaired the front half of the car. Howard, who also drives the team's semi-rig to the races, picked the car up Tuesday.
"I want to send a big thanks out to Joe Monden for the extra effort he put out to get this car ready," said Howard. "If it wasn't for him, we probably wouldn't be ready for Indy. I also have to thank my crew chief Mark Gardner and my husband Paul for taking time out of their schedules last week to get the car down to his shop. Our racing in Indy this year is due to members of our team making personal sacrifices to make it happen, and I am very appreciative to have that kind of support."
Howard expects tough competition this weekend. As always, Howard hopes to put the hype surrounding the race out of mind this weekend.
"This is the biggest race in drag racing," stated Howard. "So, naturally, there is a lot of hype surrounding it. I think it is important as a team for us to block all of that out and just try to do our jobs. If we can do that and just focus on doing our best, I think we'll achieve our best results. We just want to put up a good showing for our sponsors Valvoline, NGK, InsideTopAlcohol.com, St. Moritz Machine and Broken Arrow Powder Coating."
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the alcohol cars. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
