GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Just a few weeks after opening the season with a win at the Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Houston, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster racer Shelly Howard is looking to keep her win streak going during this weekend's Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. Howard cites that her win a few weeks ago doesn't give her any credit this weekend; this weekend is a new race.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., is pleased with starting the season off with a win, but quickly states that her team will not 'rest on their laurels' to speak this weekend.
"This weekend is a totally new race," said Howard. "We start from scratch at every race. It works both ways; no matter how good or bad you did at your last race, we don't bring any 'baggage' with us to the new race from the old race."
Howard also feels her team's chemistry is a big part of their success. Howard feels since her primary job is to drive the car and the tuning is left up to two-time World Champ Tom Conway, it lets all parties concentrate on their jobs.
"My main job is to focus on my job: driving," explained Howard. "I service the valvetrain and transmissions between rounds, but for the most part, I just worry about doing my job on the track. I give Tom the feedback from the runs, and leave the rest to him on the tune-up. It helps me a tremendous amount as a driver to know I have a talented crew lead by my crew chief Mark Gardener, my husband Paul, Joe Monden, and Chris Bowler there this weekend to make sure the car is 100% ready when we pull to the line. It takes that kind of chemistry to be successful. We'll take it one round at a time this weekend, do our best, and hopefully it will all come together for us."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with one final session Saturday morning. First round of eliminations will be ran Saturday afternoon, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
