First round redlight derails Howard.

ENNIS, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard suffered a disappointing first round redlight during this past weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Texas Motorplex just outside of Dallas. Howard, the No. 3 qualifier, rolled through the beams against her opponent Darryl Hitchman, which resulted in her redlight start.

Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster third with a 5.467 at 259.81 mph. In her first round matchup with Hitchman, Howard redlighted by a mere .012 of a second. Howard's 5.578 at 259.59 mph easily covered Hitchman's problem-plauged 7.287 at 149.85 mph.

"The car just wouldn't hold in the beams," said Howard. "Anytime you roll through the beams, it makes you prone to redlight, and that's what happened. It was a tough break for all of us, but we just have to move on."

Howard and her team hope to rebound next weekend at the Division 5 opener at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.
