ENNIS, Texas - 'Dodging bullets' may be the correct aphorism to describe NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard's gameplan going into this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the Texas Motorplex just outside of Dallas. The former Division 4 Champ feels that is what it will take to get the win this weekend.
Howard, a registered nurse in Tulsa, Okla., feels that given the current situation in the class, her team will have to dodge the bullets coming from the A/Fuel contingent this weekend. With that in mind, Howard and her team plan to do the best they can with their Blown Alcohol Dragster, and hope to get a few breaks.
"We really have our hands tied this year," said Howard. "It's pretty obvious right now, more so than ever, that if any of the top ten A/Fuel cars out there make a good run, a blown car really doesn't have a chance. It doesn't exactly get you pumped to go into a race knowing that. We'll just have to do the best we can do, and hope to get a few breaks along the way. Given the current situation in the class, we don't feel like we can go into the race and win it on our tune-up and driving, it's going to take the A/Fuelers messing up to open the door for us, plain and simple."
The Texas Motorplex, commonly regarded as the best racing surface in the world, normally plays host to near record breaking times. Howard feels it will be no different this weekend.
"It's really hard to say what people will be running until you're there and you see the conditions," stated Howard. "The track is almost always good, and I'm sure this weekend will be no exception."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
