Howard makes semifinals in Baton Rouge,
BATON ROUGE, La. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard netted a semifinal finish during this past weekend's NHRA Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at State Capitol Dragway in Baton Rouge, La. Howard's quick reactions once again lead to her defeat, however, as she went -.007 red against her semifinal opponent Lee Callaway.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster third in the field with a 5.654 at 253.87 mph, which was top speed of the meet. In round one, she took out Nick Copeland with a 5.716 at 246.71 mph. In the semifinals, Howard saw her redlight, and shut off early, knowing she had lost the round.
"It's just really disheartening," said Howard. "I know I saw yellow, and still went red on the tree. There's just not a whole lot more to say than that. We think we may have found some things mechanically on the car that can slow the car's reactions down, but we'll have to wait until next weekend in Topeka to find out."
Howard and her team will head straight from Baton Rouge to their next event, the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., this weekend.
