JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES IN NO. 4 POSITION AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS
KENT, Wash. (July 23, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 4 qualifying spot Saturday at Pacific Raceways after powering to a qualifying-best run of 4.777-seconds.
Johnson, who placed his Skoal Racing flopper in the No. 4 position on Friday with a 4.777-second elapsed time, maintained his position in the Funny Car order when he raced to the fourth quickest pass of Saturday's first qualifying session. Johnson's Monte Carlo recorded a performance of 4.855 seconds at 313.07 mph on his third run of the weekend. On his final qualifying attempt, the Skoal Racing Chevy spun the tires as Johnson slowed to a run of 6.459 at 138.94.
"We made three solid runs so far this weekend, on the fourth run we were pushing the envelope," Johnson said. "I'm real happy with the way the car ran. We've run well in both the heat and cool conditions, so we should be strong on Sunday.
"On that fourth run, we went for it. We were qualified well, so we wanted to see what we could get away with. Now, we know. We'll back it up to the tune-up from the third session and should have a nice strong car for race day."
The Iowa native will face off against No. 13 qualifier Frank Pedregon in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday at the scenic Pacific Northwest facility. Johnson has a career mark of 4-6 versus the eldest of the racing Pedregon brothers.
