JOHNSON JR. DRIVES SKOAL RACING CHEVY TO NO. 7 SPOT FRIDAY AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS

KENT, Wash. (July 21, 2006) Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 7 qualifying position Friday at Pacific Raceways to begin qualifying for the 19th annual Schuck's ! Auto Supply Nationals.

Johnson's special edition silver-and-blue Skoal Racing flopper overpowered the scorching hot Pacific Raceways quarter mile that reached above 130-degrees on the first qualifying attempt of the weekend. As the sun went down, the seven-time NHRA winner used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to blast his Monte Carlo to a pass of 4.947 seconds at 311.63 mph to claim the provisional No. 7 qualifying spot. There are 18 Funny Cars attempting to make the 16-car cut this weekend.

"With the hot conditions on Friday, the night run was so critical," Johnson said. "Sure, you'd like to shoot for No. 1, but you can't push it too hard or you risk smoking the tires, which puts your back against the wall on Saturday. I'm happy being in the top half of the field. Our run was right there with everyone else."

Johnson looks to move deeper into the 16-car order when Funny Car qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for noon and 3 p.m. (PT) Saturday afternoon at the scenic Seattle-area track. Johnson qualified fourth at Pacific Raceways last July.
