JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES FOURTH FRIDAY AT PACIFIC RACEWAYS

KENT, Wash. (July 22, 2005) - Tommy Johnson Jr. blasted his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the fourth quickest elapsed time Friday at Pacific Raceways as the veteran driver raced to a run of 4.777 seconds at 324.05 mph.

The start of Friday's qualifying action was delayed due to early morning rain showers in the Seattle area. Following the rain delay, Johnson powered his Skoal Racing flopper to a run of 4.925 seconds at 307.72 mph to open qualifying at the scenic Pacific Northwest facility.

As the sun set over the Pacific coast, Johnson blistered the Pacific Raceways quarter mile, piloting his Mike Green/Johnny West-tuned flopper to a performance of 4.777 at 324.05 to place his Monte Carlo fourth in the order. Johnson's car had a half-track speed of more than 262-mph on Friday's second qualifying pass.

"We had some trouble on the first run, but the guys figured it out," Johnson said. "That was nice. We knew we could run those kinds of numbers. Everything went according to plan and we ran a good 4.77. It's nice to prove to yourself that you have a good car. Qualifying is so key for Sunday, and so far we're doing pretty well."

Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew aim to maintain their solid position in the 16-car Funny Car field and work on a race day setup for Sunday when qualifying resumes Saturday with sessions scheduled for noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT). Johnson earned his first career NHRA victory at Pacific Raceways in 1993 (Top Fuel).
