Rain forces cancellation of Friday Qualifying in Seattle

KENT, Wash. (July 20, 2007) - New Yorker Mike Ashley is no stranger to rain. In fact, the average rainfall in New York City is more than 45 inches, far less than the 36.5 inches of average rainfall in Seattle. Thinking they were far away from the soggy weather at home, Ashley and the Gotham City crew was disappointed as rain claimed Friday's qualifying sessions at the 20th annual Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals.

"We always want to use Friday qualifying to get the Torco Racing Fuels Dodge into the show and then tune on Saturdays for Sunday Eliminations," Ashley said.

"It won't slow us down, though, because [crew chiefs] Brian [Corradi] and Mark [Oswald] have gotten things really ready to go in this climate, and when we get the chance, I'm confident you'll see the kind of performance you've come to expect," he said.

"Today was actually a long day for me, despite the rain. I spent about four hours in an interview with Tim Lewis, the writer of a book about me and racing called 'Expect to Win,'" he said.

Ashley said the book is due out later this year.

"Now I can go to see a movie with my son, Justin, and just get a good night sleep to get ready for tomorrow," he added.

According to NHRA, racing is scheduled to resume with two qualifying sessions Saturday, at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., weather permitting.
