KENT, Wash. -- The last time Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier, visited the Pacific Raceways in Seattle, Wash., was many years ago when his father Reid Whisnant was racing. At that time, Mark was crewman of his Dad's Pro Stock car. This weekend at the 15th Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Northwest Nationals Whisnant will make his first trip down the Seattle asphalt behind the wheel of his RW Performance Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier.
"I like Seattle," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "The last time I was here was in the eighties when I did the western swing on my Dad's team. I was not the driver back then, but what I remember about the track and the area is all good. I am looking forward to racing there, mostly because I am anxious to get back to racing in conditions that are a little closer to our tune-up.
"Really, to be honest, I am just glad to have Denver behind me. Our lack of run data in Denver got us off our usual qualifying pace. We did a lot of struggling up there in the mountains, and I am glad to put it behind me.
"I personally have never raced here. When I was racing trucks, they were never part of the swing. So again this weekend we will have no data to tune the car with, but I am not worried about it.
"We have two things going for us here in Seattle. First, like I said before, Seattle is a lot closer to our baseline tune-up. We will not be fighting altitude, so that will make things a lot easier.
"Second, all of my crew guys have been here before. James, Julius, and Sully have all raced here in Seattle, so we will take advantage their past experiences. Especially James' experience. James (Reichard, Crew Chief on the RW Chevrolet) was here with Kurt (Johnson) and with Toliver's team. He knows, and can read, this racetrack as well as anyone. I think that will be to our advantage this weekend.
"It is true, I have never raced here before, but I'm ready to get going and see what Seattle has in store for this RW Performance Pro Stock Chevy Cavalier."
Qualifying at the 15th Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Northwest Nationals will begin on Friday July 26, and continue on Saturday July 27. Eliminations will take place on Sunday July 28 at 11:00 AM PST.
