Mother Nature shortens Seattle qualifying for Team Kalitta
KENT, Wash., (July 21, 2007) -- Qualifying for the Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash., just outside of soggy Seattle, was shortened to only one session instead of the typical four and the final-elimination fields for Sunday were set on a combinations of times and points. Persistent rain Friday and Saturday forced NHRA officials to set the fields in this rare instance.
Scott Kalitta, driver of he DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car, leads the way for Kalitta Motorsports with his No. 5 qualifying effort, 4.877 seconds, 311.49 mph. Scott will race No. 12 qualifier Tony Pedregon (5.533 sec., 189.42 mph) when Funny Car eliminations begin tomorrow.
Scott's Cousin Doug Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, also secured his position into the Top Fuel eliminations field on his time of 4.690 sec., 272.17 mph. Doug will face No. 7 qualifier Brandon Bernstein (4.662 sec., 311.20 mph) in round one of eliminations in Top Fuel.
Dave Grubnic, driver of the Zantrex-3 Top Fueler, was a beneficiary of the NHRA rulebook. Grubnic's solo shot down the quarter-mile at Pacific Raceways was not enough to get him into the eliminations field on his time, but since he is currently in 8th place in POWERade points, by rule, he was awarded the No. 16 qualifying position, 10.268 sec., 82.03 mph, because of his top ten points placement. Grubnic will race No. 1 qualifier J.R. Todd (4.577 sec., 318.39 mph) in the opening round.
Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 15 position for eliminations.
Sunday's final eliminations begin at 11:00 a.m. (PT).
