Herbert reaches quarterfinals in rain-delayed Northwest Nationals.

KENT, Wash., July 28, 2002 - Doug Herbert made one run Sunday and one run Monday to complete his Lucas Oil Northwest Nationals performance, but it was one or two runs too short, as far he was concerned.

The first round of eliminations came Sunday before rain halted competition until Monday. Herbert drove his Snap-on Racing dragster past Tony Schumacher, winning with a 4.789-second time at 309.63 mph to a 10.994 at 94.73.

Drizzle, followed by rain, took up the rest of the day and Herbert had to return Monday morning, only to be eliminated by Darrell Russell - 4.625 at 308.21 to 4.715 at 307.21.

"It was a disappointing run after the long wait," Herbert said. "We wanted to step up the car's performance from the first round and we did. It just wasn't enough."

Herbert and the Snap-on crew won't have to wait long for their next outing. The Fram/Autolite Nationals unfold at the new Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Friday through Sunday.

Herbert maintained his No. 7 position in NHRA POWERade Series points with 701, just seven points behind Doug Kalitta.

Qualified: No. 7, 4.680 seconds at 314.17 mph; First round: Herbert, 4.789 at 309.63 def. Tony Schumacher, 10.994 at 94.73 at 275.56; Quarterfinals: Darrell Russell def. Herbert
