Dave Connolly Loses to Kurt Johnson at Seattle

SEATTLE - Dave Connolly isn't one to waste words. Asked Sunday to recap his CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals weekend, he said: "We're in a slump."

That does help explain his first-round exit at Pacific Raceways, as does his following comment: "The power is not where we need it to be and I wound up running the wrong guy in the first round."

Connolly and the SKULL GEAR Chevrolet Cobalt team did open eliminations from 15th position against No. 2 qualifier Kurt Johnson. Despite getting a big jump off the starting line (.005 to .037), Connolly couldn't hold the lead. Johnson finished in 6.689 seconds, 206.45 mph while Connolly followed at 6.751 at 205.41.

Connolly defeated Johnson in the semifinals last Sunday at Denver. Johnson not only went on to win the race, but he slipped past Connolly into fourth place, 955 to 930.

"It's a shame we didn't get the win because we could've made a move in the standings," added. Connolly. "All three drivers in front of us (Warren Johnson, Greg Anderson and Jason Line) all went out early, too. Actually that was a blessing for us because those guys are the ones we're chasing."

This was the second of three races in the traditional NHRA western swing. The final event unfolds at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Friday through Sunday.
