Tom Martino and the CENTURY 21 Racing Team came back from a major mechanical failure to record one of the quickest elapsed times on Saturday at the FRAM Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, California. After severe tire shake caused a major component in the rear suspension to break, forcing the crew to stay well past midnight to effect repairs. On their next attempt on Saturday morning, Martino's 6.953-second, 198.79 mph pass was 4th quickest in that session, and ultimately gained him the fifth position on Sunday's final eliminations ladder. Martino's first round opponent will be No. 12 qualifier Mark Pawuk. "After last night, we felt fortunate just to make it to the line for the third session. Fortunately, we were able to make a pretty good run and put our Century 21 Firebird solidly in the top half of the field. That gives us lane choice for the first round, which can be important here at Sears Point. However, one of the biggest challenges we'll face, besides our opponent, will be tire shake. It's affected a lot of the competitors, and the team that is best able to avoid it should do well tomorrow. We're going to review our notes from the last two days to hopefully do just that."
