Callaway Grabs NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car Pole

BAYTOWN, Texas (July 24, 2009) -- The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series takes over Houston Raceway Park for two full days of intense drag racing. The race is the fourth of six on the division calendar and will feature drivers in eleven categories vying for divisional and national championships. Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Brandon Lewis of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Lee Callaway, Baytown, Texas, of the Top Alcohol Funny Car class, both received top qualifying honors.

Callaway's home field advantage clearly paid off by posting a 5.776 second, 249.30 mph pass to claim the No.1 spot in the Top Alcohol Funny Car field. He is searching for his first win of the season in the all Texas field. They will get one more qualifying hit late Saturday before they head into eliminations.

Lewis is competing in his fifth divisional of the season and is still looking to grab the coveted NHRA Wally trophy. He threw down a 5.385 second, 268.87 mph lap to reach the No.1 spot and place him ahead of fellow Broken Arrow resident Shayne Lawson and Malcolm Wahle of Claremore, Okla. This event win can definitely shuffle the class standings as these three Sooners sit in the top three spots.

Other top qualifying times were ran by Adam Hickey, Hammond, La., in Comp Eliminator; James Caro of Houma, La., in Super Stock; and David Buckner, New Waverly, Texas, in Stock Eliminator. The division's Sunset RaceCraft Top Sportsman top qualifier was Bert Prejean from St. Amant, La.; Douglas Barnhart, Katy, Texas, lead the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster class with his 6.167 second, 216.27 mph pass; and scoring a 0.000-second reaction time to lead NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson was Derek Dorsey of Kingswood, Texas.

Gates open at 9 a.m. on Saturday with final qualifying and time trials slated from noon to 4. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have a final qualifying run at 4 p.m. Eliminations for all classes will follow. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at 7:30 p.m.

General admission tickets are $20 on Saturday. Children 6 to 12 years old are $10 and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. For more information please call Houston Raceway Park, (281) 383-7223, or visit www.HoustonRaceway.com.
