Nicholson and Harker On Top in Houston

BAYTOWN, TX. -- The action from Houston Raceway Park has come to an end. Travis Nicholson, of Collinsville, Okla., took home the Wally trophy in Top Alcohol Dragster and Steve Harker, from Gainesville, Ga., accomplished the same feat in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

The underdog, Nicholson came out of the No. 6 qualifying position to upset the pole setter Spencer Massey, of Fort Worth, Texas. His final round run of 5.659 seconds at 261.52 mph. was good enough to take home the win. Steve Harker continued his success on the weekend having the No. 1 qualifying position on both Friday and Saturday, going on to win the event today. In the finals he took the green light win over Steve Burck, from Corpus Christi, Texas, who blew the engine on his '02 Camaro in the earlier round.

In the Comp Eliminator class Lucas Oil Division Champion Craig Bourgeois, from Metarie, La., took victory over Mt Belvieu, Texas, resident Raymond Martin. J.B. Clegg, of Victoria, Texas also made an appearance in winners circle, his time of 10.642 seconds in the finals clinched the victory in Super Stock. The '69 Camaro of Terry Emmons, from League City, Texas, fell one win short, leaving the accolades to Jarrod Granier, from Labadieville, La., who hit a top speed of 118.49 mph.

The battle in Super Comp came down to two Texas residents. In the end Stephen Hughes, of Pasadena, Texas, would defeat Baytown, Texas' Dwight Pyle. Hughes piloted his '67 Corvette to the winners circle by passing at a time of 10.871 seconds at 136.97 mph. This however was not the only finals that had two Texans fighting for supremacy. The Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley Davidson came down to Ben Brown, of Irving, Texas, and Robert Sanders, from Houston. Brown would eventually raise the trophy riding his '04 Hayabusa to the victory.

Brad Clark, of Raymond, Miss., would go the distance in his '98 Corvette to claim the win over Joseph Mohana, from Bourg, La., in the Top Sportsman category. Kenner, La., resident David Strain would take the No. 1 spot in the Top Dragster category blazing the strip at a top speed of 194.52 mph.

South Central Division racers head to Memphis Motorsports Park, July 18-20 for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.
