OAKWOOD HOME PRESENTS: THE SANTOS SCOOP ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAYS, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH DIVISION SEVEN EVENT
FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER CHAMP SANTOS RETURNS TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAYS TO DEFEND TITLE
Rick Santos, the defending NHRA National champion and Pacific Division champion, returns to Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah to defend last year's win.
Santos was the top qualifier of the event with an ET of 5.732 and speed of 216.39 m.p.h. He defeated Rick Henkelmen in the final round with an ET of 5.741 and speed of 245.43 m.p.h over Henkelmen's ET of 5.811 and speed of 221.18 m.p.h.
Santos currently is on top of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Dragster National point standings leading Michael Gunderson by 43 points. Santos leads the Division Seven point standings as well. He will look to increase that lead this weekend at Utah.
Santos will go on to Columbus, Ohio next weekend for the Federal-Mogul All-stars.
Santos has six wins in seven starts so far this season. He has entered four national events and has three wins coming at the Autozone Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga., and the Mopar Parts Nationals in Englishtown, N.J.
He has three Division wins in as many starts. Those wins came at the Division Seven races in Bakersfield, Calif., and Wittman, Ariz. He also has a Division Six win that came at Boise, Idaho.
"Last year was my first year ever driving at Utah," said Santos. "I had been here with the family operation back in 1983, but that was before I started driving. I'm excited about the Saturday night show. It will be a nice change of pace. I was surprised when we came here last year. The track was re-surfaced from the last time I had been and the facility looked great. We hope to do as well as we did here last year. We think given the right conditions, we can maybe run in the 5.6-second range. With the high altitude we don't have as much power, but we hope to run that well."
