ROMINE READY TO MAKE 1999 NHRA DEBUT AT CSK NATIONALS IN PHOENIX, AZ

INDIANAPOLIS (February 22, 1999) -- The CARQUEST Top Fuel dragster with Paul Romine and tuner Clayton Harris will make its 1999 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series debut Feb. 26-28 at the Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix, AZ. The event will mark Romine's first visit to Firebird Int'l Raceway and his first NHRA event since the 1998 Pennzoil Nationals in Memphis.

"Last year we finished our NHRA season on a sour note, not qualifying at our final two NHRA events (Maple Grove and Memphis)," Romine said. "We were testing a few new things then and plagued by errors. This year we're looking to eliminate mistakes and get back to winning some rounds like we did at Chicago and Richmond last year."

Last season in NHRA competition, Romine, a two-time IHRA Champion ('97, 98), earned a runner-up finish at the Winston Invitational and two semi-final finishes at Richmond and Chicago.

The CARQUEST team will begin this season with the '98 McKinney chassis they finished with last season. New will be a 5-disc clutch and the new Brad Anderson block. Romine tested the new equipment, Feb. 13-19 at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson, AZ.

"We made a dozen or so runs and gathered information that should be beneficial for Phoenix and beyond," Romine said. "The car responded to the new equipment with some of our best 1/8-mile incremental times ever."

Romine and the CARQUEST team will compete at 10 NHRA events in 1999 -- Phoenix, Gainesville, Richmond, Chicago, Columbus, Denver, Brainerd, Indianapolis, Topeka, and Memphis.

Pro qualifying sessions for the CSK Nationals are scheduled Feb. 26 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (PST) and Feb. 27 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.. Final professional eliminations start Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. Tickets are available for the CSK Nationals by calling (602) 268-0200. TNN will televise 90 minutes of tape-delayed highlights and final round competition from the CSK Nationals March 7 at 12 noon (ET/PT). TNN will replay the show March 14 at 12 midnight.
