JOHNSON READY TO PROVE NO. 7 SPOT IS LUCKY AT VIRGINIA MOTORSPORTS PARK
RICHMOND, Va., (Oct. 14, 2006) -- To be honest, Tommy Johnson Jr. and the rest of the Skoal Racingsm Monte Carlo team are a bit upset by their qualifying position. After four rounds of qualifying they earned the No. 7 position Saturday at the Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.
They have lane choice in the first round but still weren't exactly pleased with the results.
"The guys and I talked about it after the last run and we all agreed that it was a shame we were down in seventh," Johnson said. "Because we don't have a seventh-place car. The good news is that we made four very consistent passes in qualifying and we're determined to make four more tomorrow."
Johnson drove his Funny Car to a best time of 4.788 seconds at 308.92 mph -- the quickest pass of the third session.
"We ran our quickest ET in the day time and that's going to help us on Sunday," Johnson said. "We ran quicker than anyone else and we ran consistently in the right and left lanes. I still think the right lane isn't quite as good as the left lane and knowing we still ran a 4.79 in the right lane is good news for us. I think lane choice is going to be a factor and we have it for the first session. It's good to know that we've turned in good performances in both lanes."
Johnson said the team wants to set a winning tone from the first hit of the throttle.
"We spun the tires at the top end of the race track on all four runs and I think tomorrow the winner is going to be the team that can spin the tires the least," Johnson said. "We want to start the day strong and set the tone for the rest of the day. I think (tuner) Mike Green is going to figure out how to control the car through the top end. It's all about the momentum you carry from the start of the run and we've got the car running extremely well early."
Johnson will face Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Final eliminations for the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park are slated for 11 a.m. on Sunday. All the action can be seen on ESPN2 tonight at 10 p.m. (ET), continuing on Sunday at 7 p.m. (ET).
