Skoal Racing Qualifies in Top Spot -- Reverser Ends Promising Weekend

Richmond, VA (October 12, 2007) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. had started the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals in Richmond just as he had in Englishtown--#1. However, what had originally appeared to be a major highlight of Johnson's season, turned out to be unfulfilling as his Skoal Racing Chevy Impala would just not cooperate. Due to a broken reverser, he had to forfeit his run against #16 Cruz Pedregon in the opening round.

Johnson was victorious in Englishtown after qualifying number one with a run of 4.775, and he nearly duplicated the same this time around--churning out a Friday night qualifying time of 4.790. Robert Hight also ran a 4.790, but Johnson eclipsed his speed of 307.58 with a run of 312.06 mph to stay at the top.

"With all the changes made to the cars after John Force's crash, I was extremely pleased with how it ran in qualifying," said Johnson. "It is always great to qualify number one and especially at the end of the season heading into next year."

Entering Sunday, everything seemed aligned for another great Skoal Racing weekend, but the Impala had other plans. After Johnson's burnout, the car came to a stop and would not move either forward or reverse--a broken reverser was the culprit. Johnson was not able to make his run and Pedregon went on to make a single pass.

Said Johnson, "In all of my years of racing I have never seen a reverser break while already backing the car up. We had just magna-fluxed the gears four runs earlier and none of them showed signs of cracks. It is frustrating, but that is part of racing. We'll keep after it and with how the car is running right now, hopefully get a victory in the final two remaining races."

Next stop is the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals from October 25th to the 28th. It will be another long break where the Skoal Racing crew will be able to evaluate the Impala and figure out how they are going to end the season on a high note.
