STEEP IN HISTORY, LUCAS WISHES TO WRITE HIS OWN AT RICHMOND
RICHMOND (Oct. 4) -- As a Civil War buff, Morgan Lucas is looking forward to seeing the scenic countryside of the splendid Tidewater area, rich in history and where the NHRA will be making its return after five years with the inaugural running of the Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park on Oct. 6 -- 8.
The last time the NHRA raced in the Old Dominion state, Lucas was 17, where he was a high school senior in Riverside, Ca. writing a term paper on the civil war and became quite interested in the account of the conflict. Since that time, Lucas has continued his studies, but in a different way and has developed into one of the fiercest competitors on the NHRA tour since joining the pro ranks in 2004, and now he wishes to leave his own historical mark in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
"No, I've never raced there myself personally, only on my NHRA computer game," said the youthful 22-years old Lucas. "With the weather turning cooler, I think we'll be as fast as we have ever been. Everyone is going to be looking for some real good times just as we did in Reading. We'll have to negotiate a new race track for our team and surely, we'll have a lot of fun there. How cool would it be to get our first win there!"
With only three races remaining on the 2006 NHRA POWERade season, the driver of the Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster recognizes he has a limited number of opportunities in the remaining year to get his elusive first Top Fuel victory.
"We tested in Reading on Monday and that growth will continue with our program this weekend," said Lucas, who has five runner-up finishes in his 51-race career. "The progress is slowly coming along and the results will show up on the E.T. slip. We want to carry on with our positive momentum for Richmond."
The start of the Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals begins at the Virginia Motorsports Park on Friday, Oct. 6 with qualifying starting at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) and 6:30 p.m. Saturday's time trials start at 12:30 p.m. for the nitro classes followed by a second session at 3:30 p.m. The race starts promptly at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8.
