DINWIDDIE, Va., April 30, 2000 - Doug Herbert ran into his Top Fuel nemesis again Sunday afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park and, unfortunately for the driver of the Snap-on Racing dragster, the results were the same.
Simply put, Herbert was defeated in the semifinals of the Moto1.net Nationals by Larry Dixon. It was the fourth time the two squared off in six NHRA Winston Series events this year and it was Dixon's fourth win.
"Boy, I don't know what we have to do be beat him," said a frustrated Herbert. "It's unbelievable. Most times you don't race one guy four times in a season."
Overall, however, Herbert and crew chief Larry Frazier were pleased with the car's performance.
"We didn't seem to hurt many parts this race," Herbert commented. "At Houston (two weeks ago), we changed an engine after the first and second rounds. If we keep making the right changes, we're bound to keep getting better."
Herbert defeated Don Lampus in the first round and top qualifier Joe Amato in the quarterfinal before facing Dixon. Herbert left the line first (.440 to .465), but suffered traction problems. So did Dixon, but his car found traction quicker than the Snap-on dragster, enabling Dixon to win with a 5.750 at 254.57 mph to Herbert's 8.879 at 108.94.
Jim Bailey qualified Herbert's other Snap-on dragster 13th (4.778 at 295.66 mph) but a mechanical problem prevented him from running against Dixon in the first round.
Herbert is seventh in points with 297, 53 behind sixth-place Doug Kalitta.
Herbert won't have to wait long to get back into action. The NHRA tour moves to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., Friday through Sunday, for the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals.
