Herbert Advances to Semifinals in Richmond
Doug Herbert and the Snap-on team advanced to the Semifinals on Sunday at the Virginia NHRA Nationals, race number 22 of the season and the fourth of six races in the Countdown to One. In a weekend that resulted in numerous record setting runs, Herbert's first pass on Sunday is the second fastest and the third quickest in the 1,000-foot era.
Herbert, the No. 3 qualifier, faced Tim Boychuk, the No. 14 qualifier in Round 1. Herbert had an early advantage over Boychuk, who was making his first start after not qualifying in Dallas and Charlotte. Herbert never trailed and easily defeated Boychuk, 3.789 to 3.957. The SnaponFranchise.com dragster made its quickest pass since the NHRA shortened racing for Nitro cars to 1,000 feet, further improving on Saturday's 3.814.
For Round 2 of eliminations Herbert was matched against the No. 7 qualifier J.R. Todd. With lane choice, the Snap-on team chose the right side again, which proved successful. Todd had an early advantage but the two were nearly even by the 330-mark and Herbert was able to drive around Todd to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Herbert was defeated by the No. 2 qualifier Hillary Will. Although Herbert's reaction time of .062 compared to Will's .109 gave him the advantage off the line, the SnaponFranchise.com dragster smoked the tires early in the run. With a strong 3.837 pass, Will was able to defeat the Snap-on team to advance to the final round.
"I wish we could have gone more rounds but it wasn't a terrible weekend," said Herbert. "Making that run in the 3.70's was pretty cool. We moved up in the points and that's our focus right now, to keep moving up and finishing higher than we did last year."
After the team's semifinals appearance in Richmond this weekend they moved up one position to sixth in the Top Fuel point standings. The Snap-on team now sits only eight points behind Larry Dixon in the fifth spot.
The Snap-on team now has a two week break before heading west for the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway from Oct. 30-Nov. 2.
