FUNNY CAR -- CAMARO Z28 -- FINAL ELIMINATIONS

RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, was defeated in the first round by WHIT BAZEMORE, KENDALL OIL/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, 9.924/81.59 for Capps, 5.081/301.81 for Bazemore. Bazemore had lane choice, Capps was relegated to the left lane, which saw only two first round wins out of 24 in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock.

Note: These are the only two Camaro Z28 Funny Cars in the field.

CAPPS: "We still thought we could go down there. We saw everybody having problems. To be honest with you, we thought the left lane was just as tight as the right lane. I never saw Whit. We got out there a little ways and the Camaro started to rattle tires a little bit. It went from a rattle to trying to shake the car loose and at that point I gave it a quick pedal and the car took off like it was going to be all right. Right away the tires went up in smoke. I tried to catch it again and pedal it, and then I saw his Camaro drive away into the sunset. At that point I gave up the chase. It's obvious we're still struggling. By no means is it lack of effort by anybody on the crew. I need to play cheerleader now and keep the guys' spirits up for the next couple of weeks and keep our noses to the grindstone and roll into Atlanta and hopefully give everybody something to talk about. Have I used enough cliches?" ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE CHANGES YOU MADE, SUCH AS MOVING THE MOTOR FORWARD ON THE CHASSIS? "The Camaro is driveable now. In the third qualifying run I pedaled it and got in the show. I'm not so sure that I had to pedal it. Based on the information on the computer it may have made it through the shake and run good. Then we shook the tires in the fourth run and lost lane choice for first round. Apparently nobody has really gotten down the left lane, even thought we thought we would. That's part of the problem. We just didn't qualify that well. We have nobody to blame but ourselves."

PRO STOCK -- CAMARO Z28

Both KURT JOHNSON, ACDELCO CAMARO Z28, and MIKE EDWARDS, DEWCO SALES CAMARO Z28, advanced to the second round; Kurt, by defeating Steve Schmidt (6.869/201.61 for Kurt, to 6.972/197.54 for Schmidt). Kurt backed up his record 6.840-second pass in this run for a national elapsed time record. Edwards eliminated Tom Martino (6.909/199.55 for Edwards, 6.936/198.55 for Martino).

The event was postponed until Monday due to rain after only one stanza of second-round Top Fuel eliminations.
