CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES PENNZOIL NATIONALS VIRGINIA MOTORSPORTS PARK DINWIDDIE, VA NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES MONDAY, MAY 3, 1999
PRO STOCK TRUCK -- CHEVY S-10
FINAL ELIMINATIONS -- SECOND ROUND
TIM FREEMAN, BLUEGRASS TRANSPORTATION CHEVY S-10, was defeated by LARRY KOPP, SPEEDCO TRUCK LUBE CHEVY S-10, on a holeshot advantage: 7.568/176.60 for Freeman, 7.594/176.17 for Kopp, reaction times, .498 for Freeman, .435 by Kopp. Kopp was in the left lane.
FREEMAN: "I think the right lane is better, because there's a bump in fourth gear in the left lane. I think there's two hundredths (seconds difference) between the lanes. My teammate's (Mark Osborne's) 7.56 in that lane was a real nice run, however. My run wasn't all that bad. To go a .56, and the quickest truck ran a .55, wasn't too bad. Kopp made a nice run in the left lane. I didn't think he would have a .430 reaction time. I outran him and the reaction tim was the difference in the race. My .56 loses to his .59. I just haven't been driving real good lately. I don't know if I need to have my eyes checked, but I definitely have a problem. I don't know if my S-10 is reacting good enough. Maybe my truck has a problem or maybe I have a problem. We will definitely have to find out before we go to Atlanta."
RANDY DANIELS, DANIELS MOTORSPORTS CHEVY S-10, was also ousted in the second round, by Mark Osborne (7.563/176.26 for Osborne, 7.604/175.68 for Daniels).
DANIELS: "We needed to run this one yesterday. We had the advantage yesterday. The NHRA has made the left lane better today. We just missed the setup, we slowed down, we were 2 mph slower than we have been all weekend. We just missed the jetting, the air changed enough on us. We needed to make a change and we didn't. In two weeks we will try again."
JEFF LUKOVICH, LUKOVICH MOTORSPORTS CHEVY S-10, after eliminating No. 1 qualifier Jerry Haas in the first round, lost to BOB PANELLA JR., PANELLA MOTORSPORTS CHEVY S-10, in the second round, after pushing away from the starting line with an oil leak.
LUKOVICH: "The problem was so simple that it was OK to make the pass. It burped some oil out the overflow of the dry sump tank. It just dripped a little, only about five or six drops." HOW DISAPPOINTED ARE YOU? "The roller coaster ride is still going. But I'm learning. I am now going to re-design that system and make one that will not do that. My advantage over everyone else is that I have a machine shop and full engine shop and I can re-design and improve it and make it better, and it wil be my design, only for me." ON DEFEATING NO. 1 QUALIFIER JERRY HAAS IN THE FIRST ROUND: "I wasn't out there to defeat him, but to defeat any truck I was facing. It was incredible. Once I let the clutch out I looked over and I knew I had him. What was exciting was at half track I was able to look over, that's when you have a little bit of time, and he was one vehicle behind me; I knew I had it then. I said to myself 'stay back there, stay back there, he's catching up.' It was like David and Goliath, cat and mouse. I actually got more enjoyment listening to my little sister on the radio (Ali, married to Larry Dixon). If anyone has a scanner they would have had a hoot listening to her."
