Richie Stevens Hopeful in first NHRA outing. Currently qualified #23 at NHRA Winternationals
POMONA, CA - Richie Stevens has learned one thing in his short driving career. The 18-year old, professional drag racer from New Orleans, Louisiana has retained the belief that nothing is over until is over. That's the philosophy that enables him to project a positive attitude after the first two rounds of qualifying at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California.
Stevens, who now drives one of two Collins Racing 1997 Pontiac Firebird Pro Stockers, is currently ranked as the seventh alternate (23rd) with a respectable 7.075/197.15. His first lap was aborted due to tireshake and netted a 9.83/92.92.
"We are making great strides to get into the program," explained Stevens. "We are going to continue to give it our best shot and let the chips fall where they may. I still have two more shots and I will make the best of those chances."
Qualifying ends today after two sessions and final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
This is Stevens' first exposure on the NHRA circuit as a driver. He has most recently competed on the IHRA series, where he earned two top ten points finishes and earned "Rookie Of The Year" accolades for the 1997 season.
