READING, Pa., August 21 - U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher landed in the 12th starting spot here Friday following the first day of qualifying for the Toyo Tires Nationals at historic Maple Grove Raceway.

Schumacher recorded a 4.047-second pass at 223.62 mph during the only session of the day and thus ended up in the bottom half of the field entering Saturday's two qualifying runs. An extended rain delay and dew point issues cancelled the second session.

"We actually had a real good run going to about half track and then it blew the burst panel out," said the six-time world champion. "It's too bad we didn't get that second run in today. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate tomorrow and we'll get a chance to move up in the order."

Schumacher, who has not qualified worse than 10th this season, is looking for his fifth career victory at Maple Grove Raceway this weekend. He leads the Top Fuel class in that category.

"We need to go rounds on Sunday, plain and simple," he added. "We have to get the ball rolling in the right direction as we get closer to the Countdown to 1 next month. Of course, a win would really make that ball roll a lot quicker."

The Chicago-area resident arrived at Maple Grove holding second-place in the standings, eight points ahead of Larry Dixon in third.

"We have an intense battle going on with him right now," said Schumacher. "As a result, we need to stay sharp to retain our spot."
