JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES THIRD AT READING WITH 4.794-SECOND PASS
MOHNTON, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. blasted his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 3 qualifying position Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway as the veteran nitro driver recorded a qualifying-best pass of 4.794-seconds on! Friday evening.
After powering his Skoal Racing Monte Carlo to the No. 2 qualifying position Friday evening under the lights at Maple Grove Raceway with a 4.794-second effort, the six-time NHRA winner's Chevy flopper overpowered the drag strip on Saturday's first attempt as Johnson coasted to a run of 9.548 seconds at 87.23 mph. Johnson's Chevy also overpowered the track on his fourth and final qualifying attempt, coasting to a run of 10.190-seconds.
"We had a really good qualifying position on Friday, which allowed us to try a few things on Saturday," Johnson said. "We learned that we can't be as aggressive as we wanted to be. We got a little aggressive with the tune-up on the first run and the tires came loose. It just about made it on the second run. We've got a good race car for Sunday. I'm looking to go some rounds."
The six-time NHRA winner and 1999 Maple Grove Raceway winner will battle No. 14 qualifier Bob Gilbertson in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday at the Eastern Pennsylvania drag strip. This is the second straight race where Johnson and Gilbertson have faced off in the first round.
