MOHNTON, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2004) - Ron Capps powered his green Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 3 qualifying position Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway to equal his best qualifying position of the season (Las Vegas 1) after recording a qualifying-best performance of 4.777 seconds at 321.50 mph.

The 14-time NHRA winner blasted to his best run of the weekend on Saturday's first qualifying effort when Capps used a tune-up from co-crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler to stop the clocks in 4.777 seconds at 321.50 mph. Capps then powered to a performance of 4.808 at 310.05 to finish qualifying at the Eastern Pennsylvania drag strip. He entered the day No. 1 in the Funny Car order after racing to a pass of 4.796 at 318.47 on Friday afternoon.

"Todd (Okuhara) and Phil (Shuler) made great calls so far this weekend," Capps said. "Coming off a disappointing weekend in Chicago, we needed this. We tried to run a high 4.70 on our last run in Chicago. Todd told me it was going to run a high 4.70 last night and it did. He told me it was going to run 4.76 or 4.77 this morning and it did. The motor is very happy and that's very important to a driver. The car is running great. Now, we need to worry about making four good runs on Sunday."

Capps eyes his first career victory at Maple Grove Raceway when he faces No. 14 qualifier Jeff Arend in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations. Capps is 1-0 in his career against Arend.
