DIXON QUALIFIES MILLER LITE DRAGSTER SECOND AT READING
MOHNTON, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2005) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon posted three consistent runs during qualifying at the 21st annual NHRA event at Reading, Pa. en route to qualifying his Miller Lite dragster in the No. 2 position Saturday at Maple Grove Raceway after posting a qualifying-best effort of 4.538-seconds.
Already sitting comfortably in the field after clocking a 4.538-second pass on Friday night at The Grove, the Miller Lite team took the opportunity to tinker with the tune-up of Dixon's rail and push the limits to see what the track will hold. Dixon's Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster overpowered the warm Maple Grove Raceway drag strip on Saturday's first effort as the veteran Top Fuel pilot slowed to a run of 9.490 seconds at 92.10 mph.
On his final qualifying attempt of the weekend, Dixon blasted the Miller Lite/Lucas Oil-backed dragster to the second quickest pass of the final qualifying session when the 38-time winner's rail stopped the timers in 4.548 seconds at 318.34 mph. This is the third time that Dixon has qualified second this season and his best-ever start at the Reading event.
"I thought things went pretty well during qualifying," Dixon said. "We ended up second running in different conditions. That means that we'll probably run towards the back of the pack, so we'll go out and try and get down the race track and see where we're at. I'm not looking past T.J. Zizzo."
Top Fuel racing's winningest active driver will match up against No. 15 qualifier T.J. Zizzo in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday morning at Maple Grove Raceway. Dixon is 1-0 in his career against the Illinois-based driver.
