Miller Lite Team protects NHRA Powerade top fuel point lead.

READING, Pa. (Sept. 16) - Miller Lite/Don Prudhomme Racing driver Larry Dixon protected his NHRA POWERade Top Fuel points lead despite an earlier than expected departure from eliminations at the 18th annual Lucas Oil Nationals at the Maple Grove Raceway. He now leads by 65 points (1,569-1504) over Kenny Bernstein with five races remaining on the 23-race National event tour.

Dixon advanced to the quarterfinal round after defeating Scott Weis in the first round of the race, defeating him with a run of 4.651 seconds, 317.79 mph to Weis' run of 4.702 seconds, 301.47 mph before persistent rains in the afternoon resulted in a postponement of the event until Monday.

When Dixon and the Miller Lite team resumed racing, their opponent Doug Kalitta, reached the finish line first in this paramount match up when Dixon ran a good time of 4.632 seconds, 314.90 mph to Kalitta's run of 4.590, 316.15 mph.

"You don't want to lose any round," said Miller Lite crew chief, Dick LaHaie. "That one was a real hard one considering Bernstein seems to have luck on his side for the last five to six races. He should have been out in the second round, but he seems to keep marching on and that's makes it hard. It's not that we're running badly, it's just we're kind of on the wrong side of the ladder at times."

ESPN2 will air the final round highlights of the Lucas Oil Nationals at 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The next NHRA event will be the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals next weekend at the Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park slated to run Oct. 11-13.
