Cool, dry weather and an excellent race track resulted in amazing achievements in speed and elapsed time in the Pep Boys Nationals at Maple Grove Speedway in Reading, Pa.

Goodyear cars won six of the 11 classes and had a car in the finals in two others.

Tony Schumacher recorded the highest speed in NHRA history when he was clocked at 333.08 mph in qualifying. It wasn't good enough to get the pole.

John Force recorded an elapsed time of 4.731 seconds, setting a record for Funny Car.

Things were especially wild in Pro Stock, where the bump time was 6.831 seconds. Jeg Coughlin zipped down the track in 6.750 seconds in the first round, but could not establish the time as a record by backing the time up. Mark Osborne was clocked at 204.35 mph during eliminations, what

turned out to be Pro Stock's fastest losing lap of all time. Osborne established the quickest official Pro Stock Elapsed Time, 6.771 seconds.

All the records had something in common: Consistent and outstanding performance from Goodyear tires.

Gary Scelzi won the Top Fuel final, even though Mike Dunn had the low elapsed time at 4.494 seconds. Force won the Funny Car final and Troy Coughlin won in Pro Stock.

Goodyear had three other winners: Dave Northrop in Competition Eliminator, Peter Biondo in Super Stock and Ed Alessi Jr. in Super Gas.
