Hill Jumps Into The Number 2 Spot
READING, PA (Sept. 18) -- In Round 3 of eliminations at the 13th Annual True Value Keystone Nationals in Reading, PA, Eddie Hill, driver/ tuner of the Pennzoil Top Fuel dragster, blasted off a run of 4.587 at 296.15 mph to propel him upward to the number 2 qualifying spot. In the 4th and last round of qualifying Hill smoked the tires at the hit of the throttle, but maintained his position in the qualifying order going into Sunday's eliminations.
"In Round 3 we had a real nice pass. We spun the tires from half-track on, even with that happening it was still another excellent run. It's great to jump up the ladder to the second spot," said Hill. " We got excellent data on that run. It will help us address the down track tire spin situation, and help us lay our plans for eliminations tomorrow. We have solved the problems that we had middle season and went to work on our consistency. I believe we are where we need to be now. I attribute the consistency of this car to the free exchange of information among the team. I am blessed to have an excellent crew with lots of experience and expertise. They all have something to contribute. I am open to their suggestions and value their input. I really believe that it is this free exchange that has caused this car to become more and more competitive. Now we just need a little old fashioned racing luck and maybe we can win one of these things. We will be ready for 1st round tomorrow."
Qualifying number 2 also moved Hill into the number 8 position for the prestigious Big Bud Shootout to be contested at the Auto Club of Southern California Finals, Nov. 13th in Pomona, CA. In 1998 Hill went to the final of the Big Bud Shootout, but fell to Doug Kalitta in a close race.
"Coming into this race we were tied in ninth for the Big Bud," said Hill. "It feels good to get a position in the field. We need to keep qualifying well and try to move up to a more solid spot. We came very close to winning it last year. I would sure like a crack at it again this year"
Eddie Hill and Team Pennzoil will meet Tim Gibson in Round 1 of eliminations, which begin promptly at 11:00 AM EST on Sunday Sept. 19.
