HERBERT READY FOR VICTORY IN READING
LINCOLNTON, N.C. (September 12, 2005) -- Coming off of a career-best pass at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Doug Herbert enters the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Penn., with his confidence level soaring.
"This team continues to improve with each round we run," Herbert said. "These guys do an awesome job and week after week they're committed to getting us to winner's circle. (Crew chief) Wayne (Dupuy) has simply inspired all of us, including me. He's totally passionate about winning and that kind of attitude is infectious. We go into every race believing we're the team to beat."
The driver of the Snap-on Tools dragster turned in an impressive 4.463-second run at 325.56 mph, which put him in the No. 2 qualifying slot at Indianapolis. Heading into the Toyo Tires Nationals set for Sept. 15-18, Herbert feels a victory is within his grasp.
"That run in Indy felt so good," Herbert said. "The track was good, the conditions were great. Everything worked perfectly. Now we're heading to Reading where there's plenty of bite in the track and the air is crisp. And it's a really fast track. When you're coming off a really good run, you can't wait to get to the next race and when you're running good Reading is a great place to be heading."
While Herbert has yet to score a victory at Maple Grove, the eight-time Top Fuel winner always looks forward to racing there.
"It's a great place," he said. "And it's not just the track. The people are amazing. The fans come out and support that event no matter what kind of weather comes along. They're dedicated race fans and their enthusiasm gets you pumped up even more. I love going there. It would mean an awful lot to me if we left out of there with a win."
Herbert is currently seventh in the Top Fuel point standings, only 87 points out of sixth place. This season he's scored a pair of runner-up finishes and made it to four semifinals. It's been a good year but with just five races left in the season, Herbert is anxious to put his name in the win column.
"I honestly feel like we've got one of the best teams out there," Herbert said. "And when you work as hard as my guys do, it's eventually going to pay off. We all want a win in the worst way and it's going to come. Reading would be the perfect place to get it."
ESPN2 will broadcast qualifying of the Toyo Tires Nationals on Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. while eliminations can be seen Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. and Sept. 23 at 3 a.m. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
