HERBERT KEEPS COUNTDOWN TO CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES ALIVE IN RAIN DELAYED TOYO TIRES NHRA NATIONALS
MOHNTON, Pa. (August 19, 2007) With all eyes on making the Countdown to Four, Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel team went into the opening round of the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals knowing they needed to give it everything they had, and that is exactly what they did.
Herbert's opponent in the first round was Doug Kalitta in a battle of the tool companies.
The two veteran racers lined up for the first time this season, with Herbert taking the starting line advantage with a quick reaction time (.059 of a second to Kalitta's .099).
Herbert and the Snap-on Tools machine crossed the quarter-mile mark first with their quickest pass of the weekend, a stout 4.52 seconds at 318.84 mph to Kalitta's 4.59 at 325.85 mph.
Shortly after the first qualifying session of Top Fuel Eliminator came to a close, the rains came, causing the race to be postponed 10:00 am Monday morning.
Despite the postponement, Herbert and the Snap-on Tools team are excited about their chances of making it into the Countdown to Four.
"We did exactly what we needed to do," said Herbert. "The car ran the best it has all weekend, and we won the first round. We just need to come back tomorrow and keep winning rounds.
"We are really pumped about our chances of making the Countdown. The clouds and rain might be in the way right now, but maybe the stars have all lined up in our favor for once.
"We are going to do everything we can to make sure we take advantage of the opportunity. We want nothing more than to come out tomorrow, win this race, and start battling it out for the Championship."
