Herbert qualifies the Snap-on Tools dragster in Reading

READING, PA, qualifying: Doug Herbert qualified the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster for Sunday's eliminations at the 22nd annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at picturesque Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania. After dodging rain showers that limited qualifying to three sessions, Herbert made the field on the strength of his second run on Friday.

The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series tour was making their second stop to the record-setting facility this month. After persistent rains canceled the race in Reading two weeks ago, Mother Nature made up for it by delivering spectacular weather when the race teams return to Maple Grove Raceway this weekend. Cool, crisp air and a high cloud cover helped produce some spectacular racing conditions for the throngs of NHRA drag racers and fans.

Herbert made a pair of qualifying runs on Friday, running a trouble plagued best of 4.701 at 291.82 mph on his second attempt to finish the first day in the No. 11 position. The second day of qualifying was cool, dry and overcast and the Maple Grove quarter-mile was tight and fast. A light sprinkle of rain began falling just as the professional session was ready to begin, delaying racing for several hours.

The Top Fuel cars finally pulled to the starting line around 3 p.m. eager to run in the extremely good air that usually follows the rain. Herbert shook the tires early and clicked it off, falling to 14th on the Top Fuel ladder. Unfortunately the wet stuff persisted and the NHRA final ended qualifying in the middle of the afternoon after three sessions. Herbert finished 14th and will race Rod Fuller in round one of eliminations on Sunday.

"It's a good thing that we'll be racing on Sunday," said Herbert as the rain fell. "The Snap-On Tools team will do the best we can tomorrow. When we have our act together we can run with anyone, we just haven't had it together that much lately. Hopefully we can change things around with a good race tomorrow."
