HERBERT ONLY 4.5 SECONDS FROM CAPTURING FINAL COUNTDOWN SPOT
MOHNTON, Pa. (August 20, 2007) Racing action for Doug Herbert and the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel team resumed Monday morning after steady rain on Sunday afternoon prompted NHRA officials to postpone the event.
Prior to the rain delay, Herbert kept his hopes of making the Countdown to Four alive by defeating Doug Kalitta in first round eliminations.
Herbert faced Cory McClenathan in the second round of eliminations on Monday morning. This monumental race would determine which of the two drivers would continue their quest to make the Countdown, and a determined Herbert took the round win. His 4.56 second pass at 313.15 mph bested McClenathan's 4.86 second pass and ushered him into the semifinal round.
Semifinal action brought Herbert head to head with Doug Foley. First off the line, Herbert took the early lead while Foley tried to bring an end to Herbert's Countdown quest and take the round win. Not to be deterred, Herbert and the Snap-on Tools dragster clocked another 4.56 second pass at 312.93 mph, while Foley passed through the lights with a 5.40 at 172.32.
Before the next round could take place, the skies once again opened on Maple Grove Raceway. At approximately 4:30 p.m., NHRA officials were forced to postpone all racing activities.
After coming into the final race of the regular season in the No. 11 position, 53 outside the top eight, Herbert prepares himself for the final round of the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals knowing this is more than a final round. Winning this race puts Herbert into the No. 8 position in points, and allows him to race with seven other drivers for the right to be crowned Champion.
"The team has been doing great," said Herbert, "and I have lots of confidence in my driving. Now we need to finish this. I just can't believe we have to wait another day to race. I'm ready to go right now in the rain.
"This round tomorrow may be the biggest round of my life, and I'm going to dig way down and give it everything I have. We need a win, and we need it now."
