HERBERT RUNNING AT THE TOP AGAIN

READING, Penn. (September 16, 2005) -- Doug Herbert is making a habit of being a threat to the No. 1 qualifying position these days. The pilot of the Snap-on Tools dragster drove to the No. 3 spot Friday at the Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

Herbert made two solid passes down the track during the first two qualifying sessions. Herbert turned in a 4.541-second pass at 318.92 mph. If the time holds, it will be the second consecutive top three qualifying position. Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at noon and 3 p.m.

"We're doing a really good job and we have a legitimate race car," Herbert said. "The two guys who are in front of us (in qualifying, Tony Schumacher and Larry Dixon) have been champions the last four years so this is not a bad place to be on the first day of the event. We're becoming more consistent every week and not only are we consistent, but we're quick. It's real exciting to be driving this Snap-on dragster."

The first qualifying pass of the day was a 4.621 at 316.17.

"It felt good on both laps and we made improvement from the first run to the second and that's our goal every weekend," Herbert said. "The last few weeks we've come on strong and I agree with Wayne (Dupuy, crew chief) when he says that we're a top three or four car. It just keeps getting better."

ESPN2 will broadcast qualifying of the Toyo Tires Nationals on Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. while eliminations can be seen Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. and Sept. 23 at 3 a.m. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
