Schumacher beats Herbert in Lucas Oil Nationals.

MOHNTON, Pa., Sept. 16, 2002 - Doug Herbert's best run of eliminations wasn't quite good enough Monday when the rain-plagued Lucas Oil Nationals resumed under sunny skies at Maple Grove Raceway.

Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster stopped the timers in 4.703 seconds at 307.65 mph, but it was chasing Tony Schumacher's dragster across the line. The winning time was 4.640 at 315.42 mph.

"We need to improve out performance," said Herbert, who beat Clay Millican in the opening round Sunday before inclement weather sent everyone home early. "We needed to run better. We've been getting to the second round quite a bit. Now we want to get to the semifinals more often.

"One good thing is we won't have to wait long for our next race. We'll be in Memphis Friday to see if we can go more rounds."

Herbert remained seventh with 974 points. Doug Kalitta, who was once within a round of Herbert, won the event and now has 1053 points.

Qualifying for the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park takes place Friday and Saturday with eliminations Sunday.
