Torco Racing Fuels Cobalt Driver Meets V Gaines Wednesday

READING, Pa., August 21, 2007 -- Dave Connolly made the most of his two Monday eliminations rounds but he's had a long, long wait for his semifinal round against V Gaines in the rain-plagued Toyo Tires Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

For the third consecutive day, NHRA officials were forced to postpone eliminations due to inclement weather. They said action would resume Wednesday morning and the event would be completed as soon as possible. This is the fifth time in six years that rain has created schedule changes at Maple Grove.

Connolly said the rain stopped long enough Tuesday for the track to be dried, "but by the time we unloaded the car and got it ready, the rain started again."

Connolly, driving Evan Knoll's Torco Racing Fuels Chevy Cobalt, needed all of the third-best elapsed time of Sunday's opening round to get his first-round win over Greg Stanfield. Connolly had to run down Stanfield, who had a starting line advantage, and did, stopping the clock two-thousandths of a second ahead of Stanfield, 6.639 to 6.656 seconds. Stanfield had a .031-second reaction to Connolly's .046.

A perfect reaction time, .000, sent Connolly to an easy win over Craig Hankinson in the quarterfinals. He ran 6.648 at 207.02 mph to a 6.663 at 206.29.
