It is only on thing on the minds of Cory McClenathan and the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM Boost Top Fuel team as they prepare for the rerun of the rain-delayed Toyo Tires Nationals this weekend at Maple Grove Raceway. And the sooner the better.
It has been a long wait since they missed the starting line-up Dallas Saturday by the smallest of margins -- one-thousandth of a second.
"We want to redeem ourselves at Reading . . . qualify well early, get set for eliminations and win some rounds, preferably all of them, on Sunday," said McClenathan. "We barely missed our mark, but it doesn't matter by how far. We missed it, and that really hurts us. It definitely was not the performance this car is used to making.
"We're making no excuses, plain and simple."
A point could be made, however, about unexpected mechanical problems on the first three qualifying attempts, and the rapid change in Saturday's conditions that turned a mediocre last session into a bumper crop of low elapsed times. Crew chief Wes Cerny was purposely conservative in the tune-up on the fourth run because he wanted to get the car in the program and he thought he had with the 4.704, but Joe Hartley stepped up with 4.703.
"We know we can run much better. We really should be back on track at Reading," added McClenathan, who is 10th in POWERade Series points with 825. "We are behind the 8-ball now because several drivers are breathing down our necks."
Qualifying is scheduled at 2 and 5 p.m. on Friday and noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Eliminations start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
