Burgess leads Pro Mod field in Sin City
LAS VEGAS (April 1) – R2B2 Racing owner and driver Roger Burgess sits atop the Get Screened America Pro Mod Series after Friday's qualifying at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The car has been running good. Even at the last race, it ran good, but it just didn't race good.
Burgess rattled off one of only two sub-6 second passes during Friday's sessions to lead the pack with a 5.956 second run at 249.81 mph in his turbocharged ProCare Rx 1953 Corvette.
"The car has been running good. Even at the last race, it ran good, but it just didn't race good," Burgess said. "We had some issues, but I think we've figured them out. Things are going to be a lot better from this point forward."
Gainesville winner Khalid Balooshi went 5.986 at 238.09 mph for the second quickest pass of the day.
Burgess' Corvette is a construction departure from most of the other cars in the class with the turbo power plant and automatic transmission, but he said the concept is really headed in the right direction.
"We're excited for a lot of reasons," Burgess said. "Once we get this car sorted out, it's going to be a very consistent race car. I also think it's going to be one of the lowest total cost of ownership race cars, which is what I'm trying to achieve."
Conditions are expected to change pretty radically over the course of the rest of the weekend, but like most successful people in Las Vegas, Burgess believes he has an ace in the hole.
"Me secret weapon here is (crew chief) Steve Petty," Burgess said. "A lot of guys don't know who he is, but they are going to know who he is before the season is out. I can promise you that."
A trio of R2B2 Racing's other cars are poised to make the field in Las Vegas with Melanie Troxel sitting No. 10 in her supercharged Roadrage.com Camaro after a best pass of 6.122 seconds at 242.58 mph. Brad Personett's turbo ProCare Rx Camaro is No. 11 after a 6.164 at 242.58 mph. Micke Gullqvist of Sweden, who drives an R2B2 car, is 13th with a 6.208 at 235.68 mph.
