POMONA, Calif. (Nov 5)—With the final race of the National Hot Rod Association season less than a week away, the fight to hold on to positions in the Pro Stock point championship has turned into a fierce battle between several competitors. The competition is so tight that a good qualifying spot could be the difference between walking across the stage at the awards ceremony Tuesday night or packing up and heading home Sunday after the event. The pressure is on and several drivers are feeling the need for an almost perfect run.

Greg Anderson, driver of the Troy Humphrey Motorsports Oldsmobile, is one of those drivers feeling the pressure. He is currently sitting 10th in the points and is doing everything he can to stay there as the 11th place competitor, Mike Thomas, is just 27 points behind and is chomping at Anderson’s heels to move into the 10th spot.

“Not making the field in Houston hurt us point wise,” said Anderson. “We didn’t gain that many points and Thomas had a good run and gained a bunch on us. We were running good but had a $20 part break during the last qualifying session which slowed us down when everyone else sped up. We were headed for a run that would have put us in the top half of the field, but that’s just circumstances more or less just plain bad luck.

“But I’m not worried. We qualified well at Pomona the first of the year and the car likes the track and so does the driver, so we should have no problem. I feel we have a handle on the set-up there and we are ahead of the game. The whole team has their noses to the grindstone and I’m very hungry for a win.”

Anderson qualified fourth when the NHRA visited Pomona in February. He needs to qualify for the 16-car field in order to maintain his 10th place position.

The 35th Annual Southern California Auto Club NHRA Finals is scheduled for November 11-14 at the historic Pomona Raceway at the Fairplex, the oldest venue on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series tour. Qualifying for the Pro classes starts on Thursday and continues through Saturday, with final eliminations scheduled for Sunday. For more information on times and ticket prices call the track at (800) 884-6472.
